What part of Japan are you coming to? If i'm around (i'll be in the states from August 7th i think) perhaps we can get together. I'd be happy to point at some "here's what's going on" sites and other info sources.
In the Tokyo area there's a magazine called "metropolis" that has lots of useful event info. I'm sure it's online somewhere. In Osaka area, Kansai Time Out (kto. something or other)and Kansai Scene (also online somewhere) are usually good for info.
As for money, the Post Office ATMs here are the main way to make international withdrawls. Assuming you have an ATM card with Cirrus or Star or one of those groups on it. They keep weird hours, though (not open on Sundays, only AM on Saturday, closed after 8pm and the like) so be prepared. People carry huge amounts of cash on them most of the time here, and credit cards only work at big malls/chain stores.
Let me know if there's anything i can help you with!

Tokyo, August 4th - August 21.

http://metropolis.japantoday.com/default.asp is online, but it seems sorta... I dunno. Too catering to the gaijin, maybe? Reminds me of the expats in Hong Kong who only ever socialized with other expats.
