i assure you, you will not need to know the kanji.

let me know if you need maps. i found this one to be good but i have others that i can lend you and they already have some store marked in. you just have to promise not to destroy and return them in good condition.

Almost all the signs in the stations / on the train are in English as well as Japanese, too. The only time we ran into Japanese-only was when we ventured outside Tokyo into Kyoto.

Heh, I already got one of those. What's been an interesting experience is figuring out how the subway stations actually map to the real world; none of the representational maps show terribly well that relationship.

I ended up photocopying a bunch of the map pages, pasting them together, and using a highlighter on the rail routes; I felt like a kindergartener, but it was most useful for getting a feel of how the city is laid out.
