NEXTWAVE: You Are Shitting Me @ 10:39 am

[info]warren_ellis:

No, really. This isn’t serious, right?

I mean, the book got cancelled.

busy day - to do @ 09:13 am

[info]c_death:
Wash face finish coffee, maybe make another pot and drink another.

Go to post office and ship out zebra artwork. Pay for another 6 months (will only be here for at most 2 month w/o a job, but Frank still have things connected to the po box so will just give him the key when I leave)

go to trader joe's and pick up an empty wine case.

Maybe swing by Walgreen's or Safeway for plastic ware. I know its by nothing day but see below.

Clear off desk and under desk for Saturday's storage emptying. Make sure east wall in kitchen is cleared for Saturday storage emptying. (I use my laptop in the kitchen were I can slurp free wifi, my desk isn't really used as an office space anyhow.)

Speaking of which call Public Storage about pending payment and me not going to be there after all next month and see how I go about with a refund.

Wash dishes and mixer set. make sure everything is together for the mixer and box up for Frank. Make sure knife set is clean and together and put on ebay/CL make sure flatware is clean and together and put on ebay/CL. (will be living off of plastic ware until I leave)

Pack up wine for Frank. Might keep 1 or 2 bottles, but I do already have open absinthe. Oddly I'm not in a "get fucked up drunk" depressed. Depressed yes, but I have no urge to drink.

Finish putting up curtain panels on ebay.

If payment for magic cards is received today, go back to post office.

If payment for magic cards is received today, finally put up more magic cards. Cool that one person was bidding, not so cool that I've had to wait two week for payment on the first auction that ended.

Continue to look at Craigslist for job. Unless Frank changes his mind I am leaving but I would rather go to Washington state than the other places offered to me. Old friends win over free room and board. However, I would need to save and/or wait until my CD matures to go to Washington (or go to the places offered to me until CD matures and then go to Washington). Or maybe I'm hoping that if I stay a little bit longer their relationship will end "naturally" and he will come back to me. As it stands he will not break up with her just to be with me. I can't live in a state of purgatory.

Go through toiletries, makeup and other bathroom stuff and see what is salable (ie hair irons etc) and what isn't. toss the 'isn't' if I don't actually use it.

Put what I am keeping toiletries wise in another storage, clear off top of cubby hole bookcase unit and photo and put on Craigslist for sell.

debating if its too soon to try and sell cookware. sure I can live off of plastic and paper dishes for two months but I can't be eating out all the time either.

Don't cry.

breathe.

Door opening help @ 04:23 pm

[info]hackaday:

For those who are seeking prosthetic limbs, or just require a little bit of robotic gripper help, the choices are very few and very costly. A newcomer to the area is hoping to change the costly part with their door opening arm. Costing only $2,000 to build, it is quite cheap compared to the other offerings. This arm can grip, twist, and swing its arm at the same time using a single motor thanks to a slip clutch.

Fear and Public Perception @ 08:25 am

[info]bruce_schneier:

This 1996 interview with psychiatrist Robert DuPont was part of a Frontline program called "Nuclear Reaction."

He's talking about the role fear plays in the perception of nuclear power. It's a lot of the sorts of things I say, but particularly interesting is this bit on familiarity and how it reduces fear:

You see, we sited these plants away from metropolitan areas to "protect the public" from the dangers of nuclear power. What we did when we did that was move the plants away from the people, so they became unfamiliar. The major health effect, adverse health effect of nuclear power is not radiation. It's fear. And by siting them away from the people, we insured that that would be maximized. If we're serious about health in relationship to nuclear power, we would put them in downtown, big cities, so people would see them all the time. That is really important, in terms of reducing the fear. Familiarity is the way fear is reduced. No question. It's not done intellectually. It's not done by reading a book. It's done by being there and seeing it and talking to the people who work there.

So, among other reasons, terrorism is scary because it's so rare. When it's more common -- England during the Troubles, Israel today -- people have a more rational reaction to it.

My recent essay on fear and overreaction.

Autonomous Turret wielding biped bot @ 02:14 pm

[info]hackaday:

Pay close attention. At roughly 36 seconds we see Asimov’s laws going out the window. We’re pretty sure we saw this little autonomous battle bot take a shot at a human. We can’t tell for sure, but it looked like it enjoyed it too.

This bot is being built by [xdream] to compete in the Mech Warfare section of the Robo Games 2010. His target acquisition system and firing are completely autonomous. We think his motion is controlled by an operator though.

This little fellow may seem harmless enough, until you realize that those servos and guns could be replaced and this “little guy” becomes that “big fella”. That’s not anything the maker suggested, we’re just pointing out that a killer robot is only cute when it’s small.

There. More time. Now go play! Don't worry too much about what you put into it. This is meant to be a prompt people can have fun with, ideally on their lunch breaks.

thankful @ 10:48 pm

[info]warsop:
Current Mood: sleepy

Although it has, in many ways, been a rough year, I do have a lot to be thankful for.

I'm thankful for the boy and our marriage this year. I'm thankful that he understands me and that what is important to him is important to me. I'm thankful that we mostly agree, and that we can deal with our disagreements both big and small.

I'm thankful that the boy and I are both still employed, and know how lucky we are that this is true.

I'm thankful that our cats are happy and healthy. I'm thankful that our vet helps us keep it that way, and that we were able to treat Tipsy's broken thyroid, and he's now more energetic and playful than he's been in quite some time.

I'm thankful that my mom pulled through her heart attack earlier this year, and that it helped her find a new doctor who listens to her and is willing to help her with her myriad medical issues. I'm thankful that she's finally doing something to figure out which matrix of medications and side effects she's willing to live with, instead of not saying something when the side effects are debilitating.

I'm thankful that I was successful last year in losing a fair amount of weight, and that I was successful this year in keeping it off. I'm thankful that I've gotten healthier and haven't felt like I was losing out on anything or that I had to make a lot of big changes. I'm thankful that I learned to think about what I'm doing, both with food and exercise. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than it used to be.
