Capacitance sensor guide (AD7746) @ 09:32 pm

[info]hackaday:

capacitive_sensor

[Marcus] has written up his experiences using the AD7746 capacitance sensor. He used the SparkFun breakout board in conjunction with an Arduino. The available Arduino code wasn’t that great so he rewrote it to be easier to understand. The AD7746 is an I2C device that can be continuously read, but this doesn’t mesh well with the Wiring libraries. Additionally, the calibration routine from the data sheet is difficult to understand. He’s included all of the code he used plus a Processing sketch to help visualize the input which will hopefully make your experience with the chip much more smooth.

I find myself wanting an Xbox @ 01:48 pm

[info]camille:
Max and I went over to a friends house last weekend and ended up playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy together for several hours. I forgot how much fun video games are... especially when you play them with someone you really dig.
It was the first time I had played a video game of any kind in oh maybe... 6 or 7 years. I used to really enjoy them (video games) but I sort of gave them up with network TV and fiction books as things I didn't have time for, or more accurately “things that will suck up time I really would feel better about spending other ways.”
My life is a whole lot more balanced these days than it was 6 or 7 years ago. And I am left wondering if I could handle an Xbox in my home without letting it take over my life for any amount of time...
Max and I certainly have those evenings when we want to hang out with each other but are too exhausted from our day that anything super active or intellectual are beyond our reach and we just need to veg together and get low. I see how video games could fit here....
At the same time.... I start a nursing program in less than a month... maybe I should not play with fire...

Toilet paper dispenser @ 06:08 pm

[info]hackaday:

Solving the age old problem of… wait, what problem are they solving? These students at UC Berkeley have built a toilet paper dispenser prototype. Not only does it meter out an exact amount for you, it will fold it and cut it as well. They mention this being the perfect accessory for a high tech bathroom, and we can agree. To be serious though, in public places, metering out limited amounts of toilet paper at a time could possibly result in major cost savings. We think the next prototype should have different preference settings such as; wadded, folded, or wrapped around your hand. Anyone else’s mind suddenly filled with unpleasant imagery?

Art Challenge: Draw Yourself Disturbingly Sexier Than You Are. @ 12:51 pm

[info]ghastlycomic:
So the other day I was sitting thinking about webcomics. This got me thinking of MegaTokyo which got me thinking of how Fred Gallagher draws himself. Which got me thinking of how pretty much every comic artist with the possible exception of Sergio Aragones draws themselves much sexier than they actually are. This got me thinking about how seldom I have drawn myself. Which got me thinking of what it would be like if I pushed the unrealistic sexy self portrait boundaries to their disturbing extremes. Which made me come up with this.

This got me thinking it would be a great challenge to my fellow artists to draw a self portrait where they too pump the unrealistic sexy self portrait boundaries to their disturbing sextremes.

So there you have it. Draw a self portrait of yourself that is disturbingly sexy. Let's see the sexy, people.

FAQs For The San Diego Comic Con @ 04:40 pm

[info]warrenelliswire:

Okay. Things are going to be a bit patchy here for the next seven days, due to work and travel. So no more Station Idents, I’m just going to post when I can.

FAQs for San Diego, then:

* PLANETARY #27 comes out in October, I’m told.

* FELL #10 is underway right now on this end, so don’t bug Ben. We’re on it. It’ll be a while before it’s ready.

* DESOLATION JONES remains in temporary limbo for various reasons. Wildstorm and I are working on it, is all you need to know.

* NEWUNIVERSAL remains on pause while Steve and I do an IRON MAN thing, and we’ll return to finish it once we’re done. Scheduling was the enemy — after the loss of the computer, there were only so many scripts and stories I could reconstitute simultaneously, and ASTONISHING X-MEN trumped it on the scheduling.

* Phil Jiminez just turned in his first ASTONISHING X-MEN issue. I love working with Phil.

* I arrive at San Diego a hair before midnight on Thursday and leave first thing Saturday morning. I’m there exclusive to the Marvel Anime zaibatsu, and my time is scheduled tightly all through Friday. I start at 9.30am, for god’s sake. I normally never even see 9.30am.

* My only public appearances there are:

* The Marvel Animation Panel, 4.30pm - 5.30pm. I think I don’t actually go on stage until 5.10.

* Signing at the Marvel booth, which is #2429, from 6pm to 7pm. There will probably be a limit on number of items to be signed, and if you turn up with a handtruck stacked full of comics I will have Security rape you with a Wolverine toy behind the booth.

* This is a weird one, but… a lot of people ask if they can bring me whisky. Which is incredibly kind and not at all required. If you bought a comic I wrote and liked it, then that’s really all I needed. And this time, in fact, it’s really not necessary, as I’m travelling very light and won’t be able to take it home with me. I feel weird even mentioning this.

* And, yes, I will shake hands with you. The reason I don’t shake hands at other shows is that I’m signing for six or seven hours a day, for a minimum of three days, and everyone sticks their hand out, and the lesson I learned at Heroes Con is that shaking hands with everyone who sticks their hand out means that by the end of the second day my hand is pulp. Poor old Steve Saffel shook hands with me when I was on my way out of the building after my second or third long signing and I yelped. I’m not a professional politician, I’m a writer, I already type for at least 12 hours a day, and I kind of need the hand. One hour at a signing table is a different thing. People get unusually stroppy about this. So I mention it now. And, really, if my not being able to shake hands with you at San Diego or Chicago really did ruin your week, enough for you to keep complaining about it online years later? You’re mentally ill. Seek help before you ruin the lives of your friends and families.

* Also? I am not scary. I mean, I am completely not scary. Do not approach in fear.

* These are, internet snark mongoloid reading this, NOT rules. It says FAQ at the top there.

* Also, I won’t have sex with you unless you pay me.

There. Done. Tom Spurgeon has a proper guide to surviving San Diego, a must-read.

(no subject) @ 02:52 am

[info]i_like_hiding, posting in [info]sfbayarea:
Hello...

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this or not, but I am desperate because I have been doing a lot of research, and haven't found any answers. My boyfriend's birthday is coming up next week, and I have been searching for something fun (but not too expensive) to do in the bay area. Particularly, I have been trying to find a place that has laser light shows! Like one with The Beatles or Pink Floyd. We have always been wanting to go to one!

So, I was wondering if anyone knew of any? I have been searching and searching - and no luck! Just rental places - maybe they don't exist in the bay area? Any other particularly fun and cheaper things to do? I have done research on this as well, but it's hard to find things that are off the beaten path, and not just normal tourist attractions.

Also... any recommendations on any good places to eat? Ones that are especially fun and have a fun atmosphere (again, not too expensive, but maybe up to $20 a person for dinner), we are also vegetarians (but eat fish), so it being veg friendly would be helpful :).

Thanks so much for any suggestions in advance!

Vintage Flop Bunny @ 02:18 am

[info]blargablarga, posting in [info]darkthreads:
This little bunny has had a difficult beginning in life; his first 40 years or so were spent in the unfortunate position of a pair of stockings. What happened to him before he found his way to the vintage store is a mystery; but as soon as I saw him, I knew that he needed to be freed from his previous functional use; to find a form more pleasing to the new life that he deserved.

Made from primarily recycled materials, save for the new thread and stuffing, this little bunny would make an adorable addition to any animal collection. His eyes are sewn securely and should not, to the best of my ability, prove to be a chocking hazard. I have trusted toys of this type to everyone from newborn infants to adults, and have had no complaints. :)

This gray fabric is reminiscent of the velveteen rabbit, without, of course, the velvet. ;) Though the flop bunny had a difficult start, he doesn't want to be judged by his past. He is desperately searching for someone full of love and compassion, possibly even someone who appreciates his recycled skin, and understands that his fluffy center is as soft and cuddly as any NEW bunny.

More pics... )
